All year long the staff at the Chicken Alley thrift shop sorts through donations, putting most out on the floor for sale, but keeping a few back, here and there, that exhibit a special value. These items are tagged, stored and saved for a one-day only sale in the height of summer.

That day has now come.

On Sunday, August 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. the doors of the thrift shop will be open for the annual Art and Collectible Sale. The event began in 2001 and is the brainchild Olga Hirshhoren, philanthropist and avid art collector. Why not keep an eye out for art and bring it to the people, she thought. The artifacts and paintings range from far and wide, and may include anything from paintings to rare dolls, local creations, there are no boundaries.

And best of all, proceeds benefit Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

Chicken Alley Thrift Shop is located at 38 Lagoon Pond Road in Vineyard Haven.
