An Edgartown man was placed under arrest Sunday when state police seized a fully-loaded handgun and ammunition following a routine traffic stop.

According to state police, Trooper Dustin Shaw pulled over a 2012 Mazda 3 in Edgartown on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road for an inspection sticker violation.

“During his contact with the operator and passenger, he observed a box of ammunition in the glove compartment,” said state police Lieut. Tom Ryan. “Upon further investigation, a fully loaded Ruger .380 handgun was located inside the vehicle.”

Lieutenant Ryan said neither the driver nor passenger had a firearms identification (FID) card.

Police said the passenger in the vehicle, William Filene, 30, of Edgartown, admitted he owned the weapon. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Edgartown house of correction, where he was charged with one count of possession of a firearm without a license and two counts of possession of ammunition without a license.

The driver of the vehicle, Caitlin Cimeno, 25, of Oak Bluffs, was cited for an expired inspection sticker, police said.
