An Oak Bluffs woman is facing charges after a young child she was babysitting and allegedly left alone in an SUV for several hours was found unresponsive last week.

Aimee Cotton, 40, pleaded not guilty in Edgartown District Court on Friday to assault and battery on a child with injury and reckless child endangerment.

Investigators said Ms. Cotton was watching two children Thursday, a three-year-old boy from West Tisbury and a one-year old girl. At about 1:15 p.m., Ms. Cotton called 911 saying the boy was not breathing and turning blue in the back of her vehicle, according to a state police arraignment report filed with the court.

The boy was brought by paramedics to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and was later flown in a medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to the report.

During initial interviews with police, Ms. Cotton estimated she left the child buckled in a third row car seat for about 15 minutes, before bringing both the kids inside, police wrote. But, after checking surveillance camera footage at Ms. Cotton’s home, it appeared the children had been in the car, unattended, for about three hours, according to the report.

State police wrote that the footage showed Ms. Cotton arrived at her house at about 9:20 a.m. Ms. Cotton is seen in the footage coming and going from her house and the vehicle, but police said they couldn’t observe the children leaving the vehicle or being brought into the house.

When police confronted Ms. Cotton with the footage, she allegedly admitted that she did leave the children unsupervised for the whole time in the vehicle while she did several household chores.

As of Friday, the boy was unresponsive and in critical condition, according to police.

Ms. Cotton’s bail was set at $2,800. She is ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the victim and their family. The court also ordered that she have no unsupervised contact with children under five years old and she cannot conduct any childcare or daycare activities.

Ms. Cotton’s attorney Harrison Barrow declined on Monday to comment on the case. She has a pretrial date scheduled on April 28.
