In 2018 the Vineyard said goodbye to beloved Islanders.

Among them were Greg Mayhew, Jimmy Morgan and Hershel West, all Menemsha fishermen whose lives harkened back to the days when the docks were filled with swordfish and other large bounties from the sea; Bill Stafursky who championed the rights of Island veterans; Mark London who for years led the Martha's Vineyard Commission; and Lucy Hackney, a crusader for social justice and a childhood friend of Rosa Parks.

Robert and Barbara Day died just months apart, fitting for a couple who had been together for 53 years; Coo Cavalho is remembered from the softball field and the Barbershop Deli in Edgartown; Ben Moore for the homes and buildings he designed as one of the first Island-based architects; and Peter Simon for loving the Vineyard like no one else has ever done through his spirit and the lens of his camera.

Regina Fischer, the matriarch of Beetlebung Farm, died at the age of 103; Peter Martell's Oak Bluffs roots ran deep as the former owner of the Lampost and Wesley Hotel; Edo Potter was synonymous with Chappaquiddick; Carol Craven with her art gallery; and Trina Kinsbury lived a life that took her around the world becoming in time a singular personality that knew no equal on an Island full of characters.

Ed Jerome died doing what he loved best, running the Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby; and Lynn Murphy and Jake Baird were taken much too soon.
