The Gazette will celebrate its 173rd birthday on Tuesday, May 14, with an open house in lieu of its usual Tuesdays in the Newsroom gathering.

Subscribers and friends of the newspaper are invited to tour the building, ask questions and watch a special anniversary edition of the Gazette roll off our own Goss Community press. There will be no formal program, but librarian Hilary Wall will be on hand to talk about the newspaper’s history and archives. Birthday cake and other refreshments will be served.

The Gazette was founded on May 14, 1846, by Edgar Marchant, and has been in continuous publication ever since. Selected stories and photographs from its extensive archive of Vineyard news can be found on the Time Machine, the newspaper’s award-winning history website.

Tuesdays in the Newsroom, the Gazette’s monthly off-season speaker series, will resume in the fall.
