The legend of the Car-B-Q began five years ago, while pondering an event to celebrate Father’s Day. A speed lawn mowing contest? Fastest drill bit at 10 paces? A triathlon braiding of their daughters’ hair — French braid, upside down braid, and the half-up fishtail braid — for speed and style.

All suggestions were considered at a late night poker and doughnut gathering by dads from all around the Island but eventually returned to the idea bin. Instead, simplicity rose to the occasion — how about merging two perfect dad pastimes: eating and classic cars?

The event is sponsored by the Harbor View Hotel and the Vineyard Gazette Media Group and takes place on June 16 at a new location this year: the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be The Food Truck, MV Photobus, Island Spray and a classic car show.

(Note: all cars must be built in 1989 or before.)

The cars will meet and stage at the Martha’s Vineyard Family Campground off the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road before driving over to the museum. Catch a glimpse of the cars en route, then get a closer look when they park at the museum. Bragging rights and trophies go to first, second and third place cool cars.

The car entry fee is $35 and includes a professional snapshot of your car. But everyone is invited to the event. After all, you don’t need a classic car to enjoy one. The event is free to visitors; food and drink cost money.
