The weekend weather was delightful. After church many people had an opportunity to go to the beach, and Lambert’s Cove was pleasantly crowded. The baseball fields were also very busy.
The Father’s Day weather forecast is good but Dad should get to relax for one day at least no matter the weather. Also he should not have to clean up after dinner even if it is a backyard cookout.
The summer season officially begins on Monday. Of course traffic jams in Vineyard Haven and Edgartown have already begun.
The town picnic will be held tomorrow from noon until 3:30 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall. For more information and details call 508-693-0081.
Marian Irving recently had the opportunity to attend the first public speaking event by David McCullough, who introduced his newest book, The Pioneers. McCullough spoke to a sold-out audience of 600 at Hingham High School for an event presented by the Hingham Historical Society. With David were his wife, Rosalee, two sons, their daughter, and five grandchildren. As a new resident of Hingham, Marian was pleased to see a former and well-known neighbor from Music street.
Bob Luskin and his wife Charlotte Fallon have returned to their home to spend the summer season. They expect visits from their family and friends. Charlotte says Bob will be using his old family china many times this summer.
Dr. Sara Rosenthal and Dr. Julie Prazich of San Diego are vacationing at their house in the cove. They were the sponsors of the Remembering the Rosenthals concert at the library last Saturday that drew a tremendous crowd.
Allan and Fran Kaufman of Teaneck, N.J. arrived for the summer last week.
Phil Washko and Anne O’Brien of Fairhaven were married last Saturday afternoon. They enjoy coming over frequently to the Vineyard aboard their pleasure boat. Congratulations!
The parks and recreation committee reports that beach stickers will be available every day starting on June 16 from their shed at the school near the tennis courts on Old County Road. The hours on weekdays are 9 a.m. to noon daily and on weekends from 4 to 7 p.m. The beach opens for the season on June 24. For more information call 508-696-0147.
Father’s Day is Sunday. Its origin dates back to near the beginning of the last century. President Calvin Coolidge made it a national day and President Lyndon Johnson signed it into law with a presidential proclamation. A Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads out there.
Tom Dresser will be at the West Tisbury Library tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. to speak about his new book, A Travel History of Martha’s Vineyard. It’s filled with anecdotes about steamships, travel by trolley and train and the first automobiles on the Island. There will be slides of old transportation modes on display and books available for purchase. When Tom talks everyone listens!
