Island Grown Initiative (IGI) will be the 2019 recipient of the Creative Living Award, the Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard announced this week. Founded in 2006 by a group of Islanders devoted to preserving local food sources, today IGI has grown into an organization devoted to a wide array of initiatives and programs to support healthy eating and food equity year-round on the Vineyard. The programs include gleaning, school and community lunches, mobile farm markets and food waste recovery.

The award was inspired by the late Ruth Bogan whose initial gift in 1983 helped launch the Endowment. IGI is the fifth organization to receive the award since it began 37 years ago.

A presentation will be held on Oct. 10 at the Farm Hub at Thimble Farm. All are welcome.
