Tonight offers us a treat. The bright planet Venus hangs in the western sky. Underneath Venus you’ll see the thin waxing crescent moon. The two are a spectacle. It gets better.
Tomorrow night, the moon and Venus are even more impressive as they appear really close together, almost two degrees apart. They are in the zodiacal constellation Capricornus. Take a look.
The show is over by Sunday night, when the moon is a good deal higher in the southwestern sky and has moved farther along the zodiac.
Many miles are tied into this show. Venus is 120 million miles away, while the moon is only roughly a quarter of a million miles away. Both are lit by the sun, which is about 93 million miles away.
