Martin Luther King day is Monday, Jan. 20 and the weekend events begin Friday with a Shabbatt service at the Hebrew Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. The service will focus on the friendship between Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. The featured speaker at the event is Rev. Mariama White-Hammond, minister for ecological justice at Boston Bethel AME Church. On Saturday the First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven hosts an event titled Celebrating the Life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — A Great American Hero. Dr. Geoffrey Dana Hicks and Dorian Lopes lead the event which begins at 7:30 p.m. Call 509-693-1530.

And on Monday, the NAACP chapter of Martha’s Vineyard holds its annual luncheon at the Portuguese-American Club, 137 Vineyard avenue, Oak Bluffs, from 1 to 3 p.m. The program will focus on youth and be led by featured speaker LaSalle Hall, youth advisor for the New England area NAACP.
