Martin Luther King Jr. Day is being remembered and celebrated across the Island this weekend.

The annual NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard membership luncheon takes place at the Portuguese American Club on Monday, Jan. 20.

The event is from 1 to 3 p.m., and features guest speaker Javier Montanez, superintendent of schools in Providence. Tickets are $75 and include a one-year NAACP membership.

Two new officers will also be sworn in at the event: president Dhakir Warren and secretary David Marinelli.

According to Mr. Warren, Dr. King’s legacy is important to celebrate.

“It’s obviously critical that we continue to commemorate Dr. King’s tireless work in civil rights and equality,” he said. “It also allows us to reflect on the progress made and to inspire the community to keep fighting.”

The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will host a special Shabbat service to honor Dr. King on Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Sheryl Taylor, the equity and access coordinator for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. There will be refreshments served afterwards by Chef Ting.

On Sunday at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Elaine Weintraub and Christie Vanderhoop will host a talk about Dr. King’s legacy on the Vineyard. Ms. Weintraub and Ms. Vanderhoop are co-founders of the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard. The talk begins at 3 p.m.

Visitors can also drop by the Mariposa World Culture Museum in Oak Bluffs on Monday to create friendship bracelets as a symbol of unity. The event is from 4 to 6 p.m.
