In remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to celebrate its 60th anniversary, the NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard will welcome Islanders to the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs this holiday weekend for its annual MLK Membership Luncheon.

The event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15. Tickets are $75 and must be purchased online in advance. Attendees will also receive a year-long membership to the NAACP.

Held in person for the first time since 2019, the luncheon will include a presentation by a group of guest speakers and a meal prepared by chef Canieka Fleming of the Loud Kitchen.

Earlier in the weekend, the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will host an interfaith gathering in honor of the long friendship and activist work of Dr. Martin Luther King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

The service begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12. It will feature speakers from the NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard, Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition and the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury. The service will be led by Rabbi Lori Shaller as the Hebrew Center’s Rabbi Caryn Broitman is currently on sabbatical.

Attendees will dine on soul food by Chef Ting of Black Joy catering.

The service, which has been held for over 20 years, is one of the Hebrew Center’s most-attended and well-received events, said the center’s vice president Sharon Kleinberg.

“It’s just really inspirational,” said Ms. Kleinberg. “It provides a way to think about the world in a way that’s different than how we might based on what we see on the news....People tend to walk out of this feeling really connected as a community. Anyone is welcome.”

Islanders can join the service in person or over Zoom. For Zoom access, call the Hebrew Center at 508-693-0745. For more information, visit mvhebrewcenter.org.
