The West Tisbury Library has selected Alexandra Pratt as its new director. Ms. Pratt will take over for longtime director Beth Kramer, who is retiring in April.

Ms. Pratt has lived on Martha’s Vineyard for the last 10 years, four of which she served as the West Tisbury Library’s circulation assistant and children’s librarian. She came to the Island after receiving a masters degree in library information science from Syracuse University and a bachelor of arts degree from Smith College. She has previously worked at many other Island libraries, in addition to a brief stint at Morning Glory Farm.

Ms. Pratt was selected after a national search, which was culled to nine candidates, said to Caroline Flanders, chairman of the library board of trustees.

“Her heart is really here in West Tisbury,” Ms. Flanders said. “She is such an enthusiastic and engaging person . . . she is highly qualified for the position and we are completely thrilled to have her.”

Ms. Flanders said the appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the West Tisbury Library, as their seven-year strategic plan is nearing an end. In Ms. Pratt’s first year as director, she will be tasked with helping craft a new strategic plan for the library.

“She is interested in continuing the library as a community gathering space, collaborating with other Island organizations,” Ms. Flanders said. “But I think, as for right now, we are just interested in supporting our new director, and a smooth transition for the library.”
