It was nice to enjoy the sun over the weekend without a trace of rain. Temperatures are still in the 40s with a few cold nights. I am looking forward to daylight saving time and spring.

The Aquinnah democratic caucus for the Massachusetts State Democratic Convention is on Friday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. at the Aquinnah town hall. The contested race is between incumbent Senator Ed Markey and Congressman Joe Kennedy III. After the election of delegates, the committee will discuss the March 3 primary and have a general discussion about the state of the union. A celebration of Martha’s Vineyard cultural diversity planning session will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Howes House in West Tisbury.

The Community Baptist Church of Gay Head will hold the annual church meeting on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. A reception will follow at the Totem Pole Inn with refreshments.

The Coast Guard Spouses Association of Menemsha will be postponing the spaghetti dinner fundraiser at the P.A. Club originally planned for Sunday, Feb. 23 due to illnesses and the school vacation. Stay tuned as it will be rescheduled for March.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum soup and sandwich luncheons have become a favorite. Denys Wortman recently spoke to a packed audience about his father Denys Wortman, Sr., a famous cartoonist, as well as an artist and author. Susan Klein spoke on Feb. 19 and Susan Silk will be the guest speaker on Feb. 26th and discuss the League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard and the 100th anniversary of women having the right to vote.

Congratulations to Thomas S. Bennett who was honored at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services employee and volunteer celebration on Feb. 13. Tom has been a member of the staff for 50 years, as a psychologist, overseeing veterans services, and as associate executive director. In his honor, the Thomas S. Bennett Room will be built in one of the new buildings on the MVCS campus in the future. Tom’s wife Carol and their son Teddy attended as did his Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Class of 1964 closest friends and former teammates, Robert Tankard, Antonio da Rosa and Ralston Jackson who flew in from Pittsburgh, Penn. as a surprise. Of course, yours truly, a fellow classmate was in attendance as well.
