Take a look tomorrow night in the western sky for a thin crescent moon appearing near the bright planet Venus. The two are a spectacle and will be high in the west for a couple of hours. The scene repeats and is even more impressive Sunday night. They’ll be closer.

Both are in the zodiacal constellation Taurus. If you could superimpose a drawing of Taurus, the bull onto the stars, you’d see that the moon and Venus are above the head of the bull, between the two long extended horns.

Take another look at the moon and see that it is “holding water.” In spring, the crescent moon appears as though it is lit from below, its cusps are poised like a bowl.

You may see the moon tonight when it is low in the southwestern sky right after sunset. But you’ll need a clear view of the horizon to catch it. The moon is one day past the New Moon phase.
