Thank goodness for five incredibly warm and sunny days in a row with temperatures in the 60s. It was just what we have needed to brighten our spirits during this Covid-19 pandemic. I am still learning new technologies, mastering texting this past week, and still figuring out Zoom most days. Please be considerate of others while out in public by wearing a mask, gloves, and keeping a six foot distance.
Some of the pleasantries of being socially isolated are a friendly group telephone call from the crew on duty at USCG Station Menemsha, a May day basket filled with goodies from my young friend Emme Carroll, and then a special gift from my friend Kenny Ivory delivered from Edgartown. These are the joys of life at this time of uncertainty. Thank you all.
The spire at Lucy Vincent beach collapsed into the sea over Friday night. After several years of withstanding many storms, it finally weakened and fell. Things will be a little different at LVB over the ensuing summer season. Perhaps this was an omen. As of Tuesday, more than 12,000 people liked the article as it appears on the Gazette website. Most likely just as many people visited the site over the weekend.
One of the most profound statements this week in the Gazette online was from Jane Slater. As always, she put it all into perspective.
Thank you to Aquinnah police officer Steve Mathias for joining in celebrating Kylee Darcy’s sixth birthday. Steve arrived in the Aquinnah police cruiser, blue lights flashing, and a Happy Birthday recording playing over the loudspeaker. Kylee’s family practiced safe-distancing while she enjoyed opening her gifts. Cupcakes and ice cream were part of the to-go program.
Rumor has it that the Aquinnah Shop Restaurant will be opening this weekend for take-out orders.
Jenna Petersiel has arrived at her Aquinnah abode for the season, waiting to see how the present state of the Covid-19 affects business at Chilmark Tavern this summer.
Chris Fischer will instruct his wife Amy Schumer on how to cook. Her lessons begin on Monday, May 11 at 10 p.m. on the Food Network channel.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Salley Mae Henley Rose Aranjo who passed away on April 28 following a long illness. Salley was raised in Edgartown, resided in Oak Bluffs, worked with Tom Teller at the Duke’s County District Court, and eventually moved on to New Bedford where she continued as a district court clerk.
As in-laws, we shared many Rose family gatherings and celebrations. Due to the current Covid-19 concerns, there will be a private family service in Edgartown where she will be interred next to her parents the late Theodore and Millicent (Salley) Henley.
