The Oak Bluffs fireworks will be cancelled this year due to the pandemic, the town firemen’s civic association said late Wednesday.

Held every year in late August, the huge fireworks display over Ocean Park attracts thousands of visitors and is traditionally the grand finale for summer on the Vineyard. The event is a fundraiser for the firemen’s civic association, which among other things gives scholarships to graduating MVRHS seniors.

In a post on the Oak Bluffs police department Facebook page, the civic association said it “has made the difficult decision to cancel the annual August fireworks display this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

On Thursday the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association said Illumination Night, the long-held August tradition in the Oak Bluffs Camp Ground, will be canceled as well.

By now nearly every major summer event on the Vineyard has been canceled, save the Edgartown Fourth of July parade. The Edgartown selectmen are due to decide on that at a meeting planned for May 11.
