In honor of National Police Week, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands is celebrating the anniversary of an Edgartown police officer and his Little Brother, according to an announcement from the Cape-based member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts.

In May of 2019, Officer Zachary Townes was matched to his Little Brother, Cayden, now 12, through the K-9 Sgt. Sean M. Gannon Bigs in Blue Program.

“As an officer, I think it is very important to build meaningful relationships with youth in our community and I don’t think there’s a better way to do it than Big Brothers Big Sisters," Mr. Townes said in a statement. “I have really gotten a lot out of this program and look forward to continuing my relationship with Cayden.”

Cayden said, in a statement, “It’s special to have a Big Brother who is a police officer ... I can ask a lot of questions.”

On Martha’s Vineyard, BBBS is looking to partner with additional police departments, and the community, to help match the nearly 20 children, mostly boys, who are waiting for a mentor.
