The Rhode Island Fast Ferry announced Wednesday it is canceling its 2020 service to Martha's Vineyard out of concern for the safety of passengers and crew during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The layout of high-speed ferries is such that, even with socially distant seating arrangements and substantially reduced capacity, close interaction with other passengers and our crew is unavoidable," reads a statement on the ferry company's website. "For the safety of our extended family and yours, we believe this is the right decision."

Customers with existing bookings will receive automatic refunds with emailed receipts and all gift cards and travel funds set to expire in 2020 will be extended to 2021, according to the website.

The high-speed catamaran service has been carrying passengers between Quonset Point in North Kingstown, R.I. and Oak Bluffs Harbor since 2003. More information is available at vineyardfastferry.com.
