Tomorrow night’s first quarter moon appears in the zodiacal constellation Virgo. On Sunday night, the moon appears above the constellation’s brightest star Spica.
Virgo is one of the biggest constellations in the zodiac. It takes at least three nights for the moon to make its way through this giant lady constellation.

Among astronomers, Virgo is a window to the universe beyond our own Milky Way. While the constellation doesn’t have bright stars, those stars mark an area of the sky painted with distant galaxies, painted with parts of the universe that are so distant that only the largest of telescopes can discern what lies beyond.

The moon is moving through an area of the sky this weekend which astronomers have nick named the Super Cluster, because there are so many galaxies.

Pick the same area of the sky on a moonless night and look at the many faint stars. Through binoculars some of those faint stars are galaxies. Only with a powerful telescope do those distant galaxies take on a shape, no different in enormity as our own Milky Way galaxy.

These objects are millions and millions of light years away.
