Firefighters from Chilmark and West Tisbury quickly quelled a garage fire off South Road Thursday evening.

Chilmark fire chief Jeremy Bradshaw said the call came in around 5 p.m. with a report that flames were coming from the exterior of a house at 118 South Road.

When Chilmark arrived on the scene, Chief Bradshaw said the fire was determined to be coming from the garage.

West Tisbury and Aquinnah both responded on mutual aid.

“It was a good mutual, quick response,” Chief Bradshaw said.

The cause is under investigation, but initially appeared to be a spark from the battery of an electric bicycle in the garage, the chief said.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Chief Bradshaw said the owner arrived later in the evening.
