Still great beach days in Aquinnah, despite a few hours of fog. The fog was quite thick on the Fourth of July, necessitating the need to be way too close to actually view any of the fireworks that were shown all around town.

The honeysuckle are in bloom and as fragrant as ever. Beach plums are looking plentiful for this year, so be sure to harvest them as soon as they are ripe in another eight weeks.

Congratulations to Kenneth and Cori DiPietro as the grand-prize winners of the annual Aquinnah Fourth of July parade which was a vehicle event this year. There were about 30 entrants who toured the town with their decorative vehicles with a display of patriotism that seems lacking in Washington at this time. Community members waved and greeted the line of vehicles from their front yards and driveways as they wove their way through town. The Covid pandemic would not stop Aquinnah from observing the Fourth of July.

Reminder: the mobile market is available to Aquinnah residents on Tuesday evenings, 5 to 6 p.m. with a great selection of fresh produce from Island farms. They set up in the parking lot at the tribal housing office–just turn right onto Totopinumayal from Black Brook Road. Looking forward to those delicious miniature cucumbers again next week!

Howard and Sandra Klebanoff have arrived for their annual stay in Aquinnah, exercising with daily walks and their friendly little canine, Bella.

John and Amy Macey hosted a socially distanced, masked Fourth of July celebration at their home with friends and family. Their son, Joshua, visited a week ago, while son, Zach, is home from his studies at Proctor Academy for the summer. Amy’s sister, Marcie Klebanoff, and Julie Rosen are here for their summer sojourn.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Madeline (Midge) Moreis who passed away at her Tisbury home on July 5. Midge was a longtime friend of more than half a century. She was the mother of two of my cousins and a collateral cousin to many of mine. We enjoyed escapades in our youth with our cousins, Verna and Ruth (Silvia), Shelley (Devine) and Sharon (Diamond). We enjoyed many visits to Midge’s home on Pine street in the 1960s amid all of our cousins. She was always a most gracious hostess and always with her beautiful smile. We will miss her rides to Aquinnah with Wanda for a lobster roll. She will be greatly missed across the Vineyard. Rest in peace, Midge.
