Ruby Red Mars

The red planet Mars rises in the eastern sky after midnight. The planet has grown in both size and brightness in just the last few months. Mars will continue to brighten through the summer. Opposition is in the fall.

Mars is moving through the zodiacal constellation Pisces, a constellation we associate with autumn.

If you are up late tonight you’ll have some fun finding the planet with the help of the gibbous Moon. The two are close, about six degrees apart. Look around 1 a.m.
If you rise before sunrise, you can also find the two high in the eastern sky.

For the remainder of the month you’ll have no trouble finding Mars alone, glowing in the sky. It is a bright sapphire red and outshines all the stars in the area.
