There is plenty happening in the skies in the weeks ahead. Tonight the gibbous moon appears right under the brilliant planet Jupiter. You can see the two in the southern sky after sunset.

Tomorrow night, the moon advances from the zodiacal constellation Sagittarius into Capricornus and appears under the planet Saturn.

Wait two hours after sunset and you’ll see the red planet Mars rising in the east. Wait a little longer and the planet has a more glorious entrance. Mars has gained brilliance this summer. And later in the coming month Mars is expected to be as bright as Jupiter.

That is three planets in our evening sky. Venus is in the early morning sky.

Wednesday night opens with the full moon rising in the eastern sky. There is some dispute over whether it is the Corn Moon or the Harvest Moon. Take your pick. Many astronomers and the Old Farmer’s Almanac report the Harvest Moon comes Oct. 1.
