Even if you don’t have kids in the school system you’ll probably recognize the name Jenny DeVivo. Aside from earning a spot with her team on the hit TV show The Great Food Truck Race she is the most dedicated “lunch lady” a community could ever hope for. She sources as much of her product from local farms and fishermen as possible and whips together some of the most innovative, nutritious and comforting meals on the planet. She’s the real deal and the proof shows in her passion and dedication to our kids. My youngest is one of the prime examples of what Jenny sets out to accomplish and achieve. He went from a typical “I don’t like that” child to one who was willing to not only try something new but one who could finally proclaim “I like it!!”
Jenny did that for him. Jenny continues to do that for our community. Join us in recognizing Jenny as the whisk and spatula wielding rockstar we know she is by nominating her to receive a $500 honorarium and be named a National Farm to School Network Community Food Champion. Go to farmtoschool.org and fill out the community champion nomination form. It truly only takes two minutes.
At the time of my writing, 14-year-old Corgi, Fiona, was still missing from her Quansoo home. Fiona, fur daughter to Bret Stearns and Sarah Doyle, managed to sneak out of the house without her collar on Oct. 1. She has poor eyesight and is a bit timid when strangers approach quickly, but is friendly for sure. She went missing in the Quansoo/Grey Barn area of town. If you happen to find her please contact Bret or Sarah, Chilmark Police or Chris Murphy our Animal Control Officer.
F/V Sinful did, as they say, a turn and burn. They snuck into Menemsha harbor to unload a beauty of a bluefin then headed right back out on the prowl. Captain Mike Hamilton took 23-year-old Owen Singer on both trips. Owen clued his mom, Claire Ganz, in on their plans and she greeted them at the dock, camera in hand. She managed to capture some nice snapshots of the unloading process at Menemsha Fish House before they headed back offshore.
With generally fair and sunshiny weather, folks have flocked to the beaches. This is that glorious time of year when the Lucy Vincent Beach gate is open, the Squibnocket guard house is shuttered and everyone can enjoy long strolls and great surf. But, this pleasure comes at a cost. The cost is simple. Please leave no trace, but footprints. If you bring a picnic, take the leftovers with you. If you bring your dog take their you-know-what with you. Leave nothing behind assuming someone will clean up after you. Be respectful and responsible.
Menemsha Beach, although the trash cans will remain out for another couple of weeks, should be respected, too. Seth Karlinsky, our restroom facility and waste collection superintendent has done a stellar job so be courteous and don’t make more work for him. Also, be reminded Menemsha is still a mandatory mask zone.
Candy Shweder is hosting a show/sale at her Up-Island Pottery on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All who plan to stop by to check out her new celadon glaze pieces being featured should be prepared with masks and the ability to remain six feet apart. From Middle Road take Fulling Mill and watch for signage.
Lathrop Keene has been spending a lot of time on the water fishing the derby. His perseverance has paid off landing him, at the time of my writing, top spot in the junior boat false albacore division. Less than a pound behind is Westley Wlodyka’s second place false albacore.
Our friends on North Road are making a change. They’re moving back to Boston. Margaret and David Emerson, chair and treasurer of the Chilmark Democratic Town Committee, are hoping to find replacements for their positions before they depart. The committee will meet via Zoom on Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. Any Chilmark residents are welcome to join. The meeting ID is 884 5584 2491 and passcode is 568695.
Happy 24th anniversary to John and Hillary Keene. The couple celebrated on Oct. 5. Also celebrating 24 years are Becky (Mayhew) and Mike Hewitt. It was a perfect fall day, with our one month old in tow, celebrating these two couples at the North Rock and the other at the Edgartown Yacht Club. This year it’s opal and next year, it’s all about silver.
