The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank announced Monday that it has added to its beachfront holdings in Vineyard Haven with the purchase of a small property on the Tashmoo peninsula.
The land bank paid $1.68 million for the .67-acre property which includes 180 feet of beach fronting Vineyard Sound. The sellers are Bruce and Gayle Kissell.
The purchase was announced on the land bank Facebook page Monday.
A summer cottage on the property will be removed and the dune will be restored, the announcement said. “Per land bank policy, as much of the cottage as possible will be made available for salvage, and affordable housing organizations will be given first priority,” it also said.
The property will be closed to the public for study and is expected to be open in the spring-summer of 2022, the land bank said.
The land bank has two other holdings on the Tashmoo peninsula: Tashmoo Preserve, which includes 400 feet of beach and abuts the town/county-owned beach; and Wilfrid’s Pond Preserve, a noncontiguous property that lies farther east. Both are open to the public.
The purchase comes near the end of an active year for the land bank, a public agency that buys conservation land on Martha’s Vineyard using revenues from a two per cent transfer fee on most arm’s length real estate transactions.
This fall alone, the land bank shared in a joint purchase of 200-plus acres of unspoiled land owned by the family of Caroline Kennedy in Aquinnah, signed a deal to buy the historic Arrowhead Farm in West Tisbury, and bought just under seven acres on James Pond in scenic Lambert’s Cove in West Tisbury.
All will eventually be open to the public, with walking trails, beach and pond access.
