The northeaster came and went with very little resulting damage in its path. The wind was strong but we were spared the mounds of snow that many other communities received. By Tuesday, all the snow had melted and according to Punxsutawney Phil we will have six more weeks of winter. One predication we may rely on will be that Tom Brady will most likely achieve his 10th Super Bowl win.

In this windswept most western community on Martha’s Vineyard, we will observe the 70th anniversary of being the last community in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to receive electricity. It seems like just yesterday that we survived with kerosene lanterns, wood burning potbelly stoves, bayberry candles, coal stoves, outdoor plumbing, Delco batteries and a totally different way of life. Electric light switches and clothes washing machines becoming a significant part of our days. We purchased black and white televisions, but never envisioned flat screen televisions, stereos, microwaves, electric stoves, vacuum cleaners, desktops and laptops, printers. News from Hollywood, Caleb’s Crossing will be made into a movie starring Native American actors. Geraldine Brooks is the author of the intelligently written historical account of Caleb that was published a decade ago. Geraldine has presented her depiction of Caleb in many settings across America over the past decade. Caleb was not only the first Native American graduate of Harvard University in 1665 but he was also the first Vineyarder to graduate from Harvard.

Across the channel at USCG Station Menemsha ,SN Patrick Shanahan has advanced to BM3, recently returning from A School in Yorktown, VA. MK3 Brody Schilling and BM3 Ryan Martyn have recently re-enlisted. Ryan attended Living Marine Resources School and has earned his Heavy Weather Certificate for the 47-foot motor lifeboat.
