It’s beginning to look a lot like winter. The snow started as if on cue on Sunday, leaving half a foot of snow that has remained throughout the week. The temperature has remained below freezing for most of the week.

Seventy years ago this weekend the town quietly observed being the last community in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to receive electricity. Recent reminders of what it was like without electricity was a cold evening when the lighthouse was completely out of service. This morning, the internet was off, but once the repairman drove down the road it was back on within less than five minutes.

It is my hope to present a few minutes of what life was like without electricity and the celebration that was held when we were electrified. To learn more, please call the Howes House at 508-693-2896 to learn of the day and time of the presentation in conjunction with the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.
