The high school swim team posted a strong showing in the Cape and Islands league championship last week while the other winter sports teams closed out the regular season and geared up for league tournaments.

Competing in the championship virtually from their home pool at the YMCA in Oak Bluffs last Thursday, the boys swim team finished third behind Sandwich and Nantucket, while the girls finished fifth behind Sandwich, Barnstable, Nauset and Nantucket.

No Vineyard swimmer had taken first place in a league championship meet until Ruairi Mullin won the 200-meter free and broke his own school record in the process. He finished with a state championship qualifying time of 1:52.15. Mullin also finished second in the 100-meter free and qualified for sectionals finishing in 52.04 seconds.

The boys relay teams had two second-place finishes. In the 200-meter free relay, Mullin, Nathan Cuthbert, Emmett Silva and Christian Flanders finished in 1.44.51. In the 400-meter free relay Mullin, Flanders, Andy Carr, and Simon Hammarlund finished in 4.06.09.

Gabby Carr earned the highest marks for the girls with a second-place finish in the 200-meter free and a third place in the 100-meter free. She qualified for the state championship with her 2:04.97 time in the 200 and also qualified for the sectional championship finishing the 100 in 58.74 seconds.

Olympia Hall also had a career day for the girls, setting a new personal best in the 100-meter butterfly, finishing in 1:13.95, for fourth place. The 200-meter free relay team of Hall, Carr, Delilah Hammarlund and Lily Jones also finished with a season-best time of 1:57.34, for fifth place.

The boys basketball team began last week with a 61-51 victory at home over Nantucket on Monday. Rammon Dos Santos and Nico DePaula each scored 16 as Aiden Rogers and Mike Trusty also hit double figures scoring 13 and 10 points respectively.

“Offensively they pressed the whole game and our guys did a good job not committing too many turnovers. They really moved the ball, got guys open and were patient,” Vineyard head coach Mike Joyce said.

The next day the boys were off to Falmouth to take on the Clippers, losing a close game, 43-41 after holding a 10-point halftime lead. Rogers was the high scorer with 12 points.

On Sunday, the boys bounced back for an 80-54 victory over Dennis-Yarmouth at home. Coach Joyce said his team found their rhythm in the second and third periods and had another strong defensive outing.

The girls basketball team also started last week off with a win against Nantucket Monday. The Vineyard girls were away for their match with the Whalers and left triumphant with a 43-14 win. Josephine Welch led the Vineyard with eight points, Kylie Estrella had seven and Caroline Walsh and Clare Mone each added six respectively.

“We played outstanding defense, we pressured the ball and caused a lot of turnovers,” said Vineyard head coach Sterling Bishop.

Unfortunately, as the week went on, the girls winning ways waned as they fell to Falmouth the next day 50-20 at home and again against Dennis-Yarmouth 45-42 in overtime Friday on the Cape.

Girls hockey also saw a familiar foe in Nantucket last week with two games against the Whalers. On Monday, the Vineyarders lost a heartbreaker 5-4 as Nantucket scored a breakaway goal with under 30 seconds remaining.

Caroline Kelleher, Paige Anderson, Ruby Reimann and Lily Moran all scored for the Vineyard. Savannah Meader, Ava BenDavid and Alana Nevin assisted on the Vineyard’s tallies.

On Wednesday, the girls also fell to Falmouth 6-1 on the Cape despite 38 saves from Vineyard netminder Sarah Hartenstine. Kelleher scored the lone Vineyard goal.

Saturday things got tougher with a 3-2 home loss against Dennis-Yarmouth, but on Sunday the girls turned it around and tied Nantucket 3-3 on Nantucket to finish the week. Maria Frangos held down the net for the Vineyard as BenDavid scored twice and Kelleher had the other goal to even the score. “It was two relatively evenly matched teams so it was a great way to end the regular season,” said Vineyard head coach John Fiorito.

After two losses to start the week, against Falmouth 3-1 on Wednesday at home and against Dartmouth 5-0 Thursday at Hetland Arena in New Bedford, the boys hockey team earned a 7-1 win over Nantucket on Nantucket Saturday and a 3-1 win over Mashpee-Monomoy Sunday on the Cape.

Jake Cleland scored two goals, the first of his varsity career, against the Whalers as Aiden Marek, Sam Hoyt, Cam Geary, Jake Scott and Nick BenDavid all scored for the Vineyard.

The next day against Mashpee-Monomoy, the Vineyarders found themselves in an early 1-0 hole but dug themselves out of it with three power-play goals to make them the co-champions of the Cape and Islands lighthouse division with Nantucket.

After losing a coin flip, the Vineyarders are the number two seed and will face Dennis-Yarmouth Thursday at home at 4 p.m. in the first round of the Cape and Islands league tournament.

“There is a time to come together during a shortened season and this is it,” said Vineyard head coach Matt Mincone.
