The ferry Island Home was taken out of service late Thursday after vibration was observed on a propeller shaft, Steamship Authority spokesman Sean Driscoll confirmed.

The Island Home had just returned from scheduled annual maintenance, but she was back in the SSA yard at Fairhaven Friday morning to trouble shoot the problem, Mr. Driscoll said.

Two round-trips were canceled late Thursday after the problem was discovered, creating a backlog of cars in Woods Hole and stranding a handful of Vineyard-bound standby travelers when the 9:45 p.m. ferry, the last ferry of the day, was full.

In an email to the Gazette Friday Mr. Driscoll said the ferry Nantucket was brought back into service along with the freight ferry Governor, to help alleviate backups.
