Crescent Moon and Taurus

The crescent moon appears high in the southwestern sky tonight. The moon is in the horns of the zodiacal constellation Taurus, the bull. You’ll see the moon in a nice triangle with the bright orange star Arcturus on the left and the red planet Mars on the right. All three are fairly close together and Mars is above the two.

Mars is so far away. The planet has lost its brilliance from months ago due to its distance. Mars is 148 million miles away. Compare that to the distance of our sun, at 93 million miles.
The moon is only two days from first quarter and residing in the zodiacal constellation Gemini, a thickly populated area of stars in the Milky Way.

The moon moves into the zodiacal constellation Leo next week.
