Bay scalloping will be extended in Aquinnah for another two weeks.

Aquinnah selectmen learned at their meeting Tuesday that the state Division of Marine Fisheries had approved a request from the town to extend the season to April 30.

Shellfish committee chairman William (Buddy) Vanderhoop said there are plenty of scallops left in Menemsha Pond. “You will run into a bunch of them and then you will go to an area that has none,” Mr. Vanderhoop said.

“They are just going to die anyway, they are year-and-a-half-old scallops, so it’s for the health of the pond to clean them up,” he continued. “If they die they’re just going to make a little bit more pollution in the pond — take them and make some money instead.”

In other business Tuesday, selectmen signed off on the warrant for the annual town meeting, which is set for June 19. The annual town election is June 24.
