The Aquinnah selectmen voted Friday to select the Island Housing Trust as the developer for a planned affordable apartment complex on town-owned land behind town hall. The vote is contingent on approval from voters at the annual town meeting in June.

Aquinnah town administrator Jeffrey Madison said IHT was the lone responder to a town request for qualifications. The Aquinnah housing committee also vetted the proposal.

Derrill Bazzy, project director at IHT and a longtime town affordable housing advocate, spoke about the proposal.

“This is just giving a more complete picture to the town at town meeting of who is going to be involved in the development,” Mr. Bazzy said.

Also Friday, selectmen unanimously approved a request from police chief Randhi Belain to appoint Chris Manning as a special officer.

“I think we’re lucky to have him,” said selectman Jim Newman. “I think it’s really great when you have somebody that has grown up in Aquinnah.”
