Following a one-year pause, the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club 29th Fly Rod Striped Bass Catch and Release Tournament has announced its return, the evening of June 12, with new rules for competitors.

Previously, the club awarded plaques for the most striped bass caught and released. It was not unusual for winning teams to release in excess of 30 striped bass, according to the announcement, which cites studies that estimate striped bass catch-and-release mortality at nine percent.

Although fly fishing release mortality is lower, the club decided to replace the number of fish caught with a fish quota. Whichever team fills its quota earliest will determine first, second and third place. Hooks must also be barbless, or have the barb crushed down.

“There is a twist to the fun,” tournament chairman Cooper “Coop” Gilkes said in a statement. “If I’m on fire, my fish can’t be applied to my team member’s quota — he or she has to carry his or her own weight. That’ll add to the fun because team members who have filled their quota will be giving their slower team members the business.”

The entry fee for the contest is $45. The breakfast and awards ceremony is Sunday morning, June 13 at the Rod and Gun Club off Third street in Edgartown.
