The Vineyard high school sailing team along with the boys and girls tennis squads remain undefeated three weeks into the spring sports season.
The girls tennis team swept all three of their opponents 5-0 last week starting across the Sound in Falmouth on Monday before returning home to defeat Sandwich and Barnstable on Wednesday and Friday.
The Vineyard’s singles players, Hunter Tomkins (first), Cali Giglio (second) and Karinne Nivala (third) won all their matches in straight sets last week and doubles players Tessa Hammond, Andrea Morse, Paige Anderson and Catherine Langley also won all their matches as the girls improved to 6-0 on the season.
Meanwhile, the boys tennis team defeated Barnstable last week 4-1 on the Cape. Vineyard first singles player Max Potter won his match 6-2, 6-0 and Vineyard second singles player Eric Reubens won his match 6-1, 6-1. In first doubles, the Vineyard’s Clyde Smith and Teagen Myers won 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 and in second doubles Ben Belisle and Jack Marshard won 7-5, 6-4. The boys are now 5-0 on the season.
In sailing, the Vineyarders topped Sturgis and Nauset 3-0 in back-to-back races on Tuesday and Wednesday last week for their third and fourth victories this season. Sailing head coach Andrew Burr said his team’s depth and camaraderie have been a large factor in their success so far this year.
“These guys are such good friends and that’s part of the equation, they really enjoy the competition together,” Mr. Burr said.
The Vineyard races against Dartmouth, Bishop Stang, Cape Cod Academy and Falmouth this week before the Cape and Islands league championship at the Hyannis Yacht Club on June 1.
Last Monday, the baseball team topped Sandwich 6-5 at home on asuicide squeeze play in the 10th inning after coming back from 3-2 in the 7th and 4-3 in the 8th. Andrew Marchand scored the game-winning run and went 3-5 at the plate while Finn Lewis executed the bunt to win it and also knocked in three RBIs for the Vineyard. Senior captain Leo Neville pitched eight solid innings before Silas Abrams came on for the 9th and 10th.
“That was a really exciting game,” said Vineyard head coach Kyle Crossland. “They were all really fired up.”
In the baseball team’s second game of the week, the boys hit the road and fell to a tough Barnstable team 8-1 on Friday. They’ll look to bounce back on the Cape against Falmouth Wednesday before returning home to take on Nauset on Friday and then Nantucket on Saturday.
On the track last week, the Vineyarders ran against Nauset at home on Saturday and Eloise Christy won multiple events for the girls while Zach Utz set a new personal best in the one mile while winning the event for the Vineyard.
Utz finished the mile in 4:28.8, 26 seconds faster than the second-place runner. In other Vineyard victories, Nick Pecararo won the 400 meter in 53.4 seconds, Daniel Da Silva won the 800 meter in 2:03.8 and Kaleb Hatt took the top spot in shot put with a 34’1.5 toss.
For the Vineyard girls, Christy won the 400 meter in 1:07.9 and also the high jump with a 4’8 leap. Maia Donnelly won the 800 meter for the Vineyard finishing in 2:32.9, Ashlei Clarke hurled the discus 88’5 to take first and Anabelle Biggs won the long jump after flying 16’8.
In lacrosse, the girls squad notched their first victory of the season at home Friday against Nauset with a 8-7 triumph. Nellie Long found the back of the net three times for the Vineyarders as Ali Dyke and Maggie Best also had two goals each. Caroline Kelleher also had a goal for purple and white.
The boys lacrosse team has hit a bit of a rough patch after beginning their season with two tone-setting victories. On Tuesday last week, the Vineyarders faced an undefeated Sandwich team at home and fell 14-3 in their third straight defeat. This week, the boys play Falmouth at home Tuesday afternoon and then clash with rival Nantucket at home Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
