On Friday afternoon the boys tennis team’s season came to a close, losing 0-5 to undefeated Dover-Sherborn in the division three south sectionals final.
The team came into the match undefeated, and with the return to the lineup of number one singles player Max Potter the mood was optimistic at the start of play. Parents, friends and tennis alumni from previous boys and girls teams cheered the boys on, alternating between watching the singles and doubles matches at the Ned Fennessy courts at the regional high school.
Teagan Myers and Clyde Smith at first doubles, and Ben Belisle and Jack Marshard at second doubles went down first, followed soon after by Eric Reubens. That left Jacob Riis at third singles and Max Potter at first singles still on the courts playing their individual matches, although the team outcome had already been decided.
After finishing his match, senior co-captain Max Potter said knowing that it would be his last time playing for the high school put his match in a new light.
“I saw that we lost the first three games and I just wanted to have fun and leave everything out there,” he said. “I was trying to smile throughout.”
Senior co-captain Eric Reubens gave a nod to the season and to the talent of the Dover-Sherborn players.
“It was a good journey up until this point, and it’s nice to go out with a great opponent,” he said.
For Coach Kevin Lewis, the final match of his first season as head coach was bittersweet.
“We came in here with hopes and expectations but we did not definitely take them for granted,” he said.
He is already looking forward to next spring.
“This team and I’ll be back next year.”
Although Max Potter and Eric Reubens are graduating, Potter echoed his coach’s excitement for the future of the team.
“Coach Kev has been awesome this season,” Potter said. “We have an awesome team and only two of us are leaving. I’m excited, I’m leaving the team in good hands.”
