I cannot complain about the weather. I have turned my air conditioner off and opened my windows for the fresh air. I think we are all happy the humidity is down.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons went out to Guilherme Silva on July 31; Chimari Dockery on August 3; Luiz Dos Santos, Benjamin Sylvia and Liam Welch on August 4; and to Marcos Martins De Souza and Natalie Worley, who celebrated on August 5.

August is here and things are changing slowly. I saw that Illumination Night is happening but in a smaller fashion. There will not be a singalong and the candles will be lit at 8 p.m. instead of 9. It is up to the residents of the cottages if they will light their lanterns or not, and masks will be required to walk around. Whatever you decide to do, please be safe.

I, like many people, will be glad when the Olympic games are over so I can get back to going to bed earlier and actually sleep. I get so excited and run every race and swim every lap before bed. I still have an adrenaline rush and can’t go right to sleep.

I am having a hard time not feeding the birds because of the virus that is affecting them. I have baby birds sitting looking at the window as if to say, “What is the matter with you? Feed me.” One day I looked out before we were asked not to feed them and there was a sparrow with a baby twice her size and she was feeding it. I could not tell if it was a grackle or black bird as it was gray color with very little black on it, but I know it was not a baby sparrow. As it cried at the mother to feed him, you could almost see the Mama on her tiptoes, reaching the baby’s mouth.

I like to keep this column happy and positive but considering that we have had some very sad happenings these past few weeks, I am asking people to please slow down on the roads. The Island is small and there are no deadlines or activity that can cause such accidents. There is no 65 mile per hour speed limit here on the Island and there are too many people on the road, be it in cars, on bikes and jogging. Please, please drive carefully.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
