Zach Utz placed third in the mile run at the all-state meet on Saturday with a personal best time of 4:22. His season continues on March 12 when he competes in the New Balance Nationals in New York city.

The 4x800-meter relay team conisting of Utz, Jonathan Norton, Daniel da Silva and Daniel Serpa placed 10th at the state tournament with a time of 8:20. Norton rounded out the field, placing 18th in the 1,000-meter run.

It was a strong finish to the indoor track season, said assistant coach Don Brown.

“It was good … it’s a long road to get here,” Mr. Brown said.

He added that the relay team performed the best the Vineyard has ever seen.

“It’s redefining a win,” he said.

As Utz prepares for regional and national championships, the rest of the team will take a quick break and then get ready for the outdoor season. Mr. Brown said that the outdoor season is the crown jewel of the track and field calendar.

“It’s really staying motivated and working toward a good outdoor season,” he said. “We’re poised for that.”

Corrected from an earlier version which reported that Duncan Brown was the fourth member of the 4x800 relay; the runner was Daniel Serpa.
