Commercial bay scalloping and oyster seasons will be extended in Edgartown following a vote by the town select board Monday.
At the request of shellfish constable Rob Morrison, the scallop season will be extended to May 1 in all areas except Cape Pogue, while the commercial oyster season in Sengekontacket Pond will also run to May 1.
The board also voted to open the Edgartown Great Pond to oystering from April 1 to May 1.
“It’ll allow for a few people to make a few dollars and extend their season a little,” Mr. Morrison said.
“As long as there’s shellfish and fishing to be done, that’s a good thing,” selectman Michael Donaroma said.
In other business Monday, Edgartown Board of Trade director Erin Ready came before the board for approval of a Mother’s Day celebration. Scheduled for May 6 to 8, she said the weekend will keep many familiar events but drop the pink and green theme of the past. The board unanimously approved the planned events, along with a downtown children’s story walk for the month of May.
In a marine infrastructure update, town administrator James Hagerty said the Memorial Wharf pavilion was set to be placed atop the newly built raised-up wharf. Mr. Hagerty said project remains on track to be completed by Memorial Day.
“It’s a pretty intense endeavor,” he said.
