The Oak Bluffs fireworks are set to return August 19 after a two-year pandemic pause, but under town management this year.

The Fireman’s Civic Association has stepped down as the chief organizer of the event that draws thousands to Ocean Park every year for what many consider the grand finale of summer.

“This is the first year that the town of Oak Bluffs has been taking the lead,” select board and fireworks committee member Emma Green-Beach told the Gazette by phone this week.

She said longstanding pyrotechnicians American Thunder will run the show again.

“They know the ins and outs and setup and they’re telling us all the little things that have to get checked off,” Ms. Green-Beach said.

Voters appropriated $50,000 at the annual town meeting in April for the fireworks, but the town is still seeking donations, Ms. Green-Beach said.

The Oak Bluffs Association launched a GoFundMe campaign this month with a $50,000 goal. As of June 1, the online campaign had collected $2,600.

Ms. Green-Beach said all the funds will go directly toward the show.

In another change, no parking will be available at Sunset Park because of the restoration project under way, Ms. Green-Beach said. Parking will be allowed at Waban Park and Washington Park.

Ms. Green-Beach said the show is an important event on the summer calendar.

“It’s something that is so important to the traditions of our town,” she said. “We know that everyone’s missed it.”
