Free lunches will be provided to Island families for the sixth year in a row this season as the Island Grown Initiative summer lunch program returns from July 11 to August 19.

Prepared at the regional high school, the meals will consist of healthy sandwiches, wraps and pizzas, served with fresh fruit and vegetables and incorporating as many locally grown ingredients as possible, according to an announcement from IGI.

All families are welcome to receive the lunches and no documentation or proof of income is required. IGI expects to serve 12,000 lunches this summer, according to the announcement.

Pick-up locations for the lunches, available Monday through Friday, will be at West Tisbury School and the regional high school. Evening pick-ups will also be available at the regional high school.

In addition to providing weekday meals for pick-up, IGI also will be dropping off lunches for children attending summer school at the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA, the Family Center and the preschool program at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

“More than one in three children enrolled in Island public schools come from families that are income-qualified to receive free or reduced price meals at school,” food equity director Merrick Carreiro said in a statement.
