Elisabeth Bellissimo and Joshua Bates were married on Sept. 10 at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Edgartown, officiated by Cantor Alicia Stillman of Brookline.

Elisabeth and Josh met at a Boston University college house in Allston where they were both undergrads — Josh was returning from a heartbreaking Patriots loss but was quickly brightened by the company of Elisabeth, who was visiting for a study abroad reunion.

The couple started to date the day before they graduated from Boston University. Elisabeth soon left for graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania and Josh moved to New York city to sleep on his grandparents’ couch and pursue a career as a writer. They were engaged on New Year’s Eve 2020 in front of the house in Allston where they first met.

Josh was born and raised in Nashua, N.H. where his parents, Debbie and Joe Bates, still live. Elisabeth grew up in the San Francisco Bay area but spent summers at her family’s West Tisbury home, eventually living on the Vineyard full-time and graduating from the West Tisbury School in 2006.

Elisabeth’s parents, Michael and Barbara Bellissimo, are year-round West Tisbury residents and active members of the Island community, he with the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center and she with Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

Today, the couple lives in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn with their dog Ladybird. Elisabeth is a pediatric nurse practitioner in the department of rehabilitation and regenerative medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. Josh is a writer on the creative team at Twitch.
