Editors, Vineyard Gazette;

I was absolutely shocked to see your article Hunting Season Begins; Deer Are Plentiful accompanied by a picture of an adorable deer. How insensitive you are! This was not the way to go.

I did not read the article. The title and picture said it all for me.

Many people who like animals do exist. Beautiful, adorable deer are still loved as is the wonderful movie Bambi! Did you give any consideration to young children who love deer, and parents needing to explain the picture and what hunting means? Doesn’t Santa Claus have deer to help him for Christmas? And on it goes.

And, yes, hunters may enjoy the kill, boasting rights, food, etc. No need for me to try to go into the mindset. I’ll never be there. You may counter that there is a need — perhaps.

I have been subscribing to the Vineyard Gazette for decades. I’ve loved this newspaper for its varied articles and wonderful photos. I’ll be sorry to see if the tone of the newspaper is changing. The days of Henry Beetle Hough are long gone. Thankfully, his wonderful writings still exist.
