Richie Combra shot even par at the division three state finals Tuesday afternoon in South Hadley as the Vineyard high school golf team finished in second place during a foggy and unseasonably warm afternoon on the links.

Combra’s 72 at the Ledges Golf Club was the second-best score of any golfer in the finals. He was bested by Weston’s Zach Pelzar who was four under par for a 68 and led his team to the top spot on the leaderboard.

Weston beat the Vineyard for the state title by just five strokes with a score of 302 to 307. Sandwich finished third with 311.

Rounding out the Vineyard’s top four scorers were Liam Marek with a 76, tied for fifth best among all golfers, Cam Napior with a 79 and Jake Glasgow with an 80.

“It was a great day, the team played better than I could possibly have hoped for. I’m so pleased by the way they played, I’m proud and excited for them,” said Vineyard head coach Doug Debettencourt.

According to Coach Debettencourt, the course played moderately, with rain from the previous day softening up the greens and fairways.

“It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t difficult and I’m just pleased with how the kids stepped up,” he said.

After 20 years of coaching the golf team, Coach Debettencourt plans to retire at the conclusion of this season. He said the 307 is the best score a Vineyard team of his has ever shot at the state finals by 20 strokes. He also noted that a score that good is usually strong enough to win it all.

“I could not have asked for a more fulfilling and wonderful last year,” the head coach said. “The kids were just outstanding and we had a great year.”

The Vineyard’s all-senior varsity squad of Nick BenDavid, Ryan Harding, Jake Glasgow, Cam Napior, Liam Marek and Richie Combra has played together under Coach Debettencourt for three of their four years in high school.

Combra, Marek and Napior will join Coach Debettencourt for one final round Thursday at the Cape Cod Schoolboys tournament at Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee. The tournament is a yearly end-of-the-season tradition for the Cape and Islands schools.

“I had a wonderful 20-year run and I feel really good about the time that I spent coaching. The kids year in and year out were just wonderful. I had a great run coaching golf at the high school,” Coach Debettencourt said.
