It may be January but it’s never to early to bone up on your classic Lefty’s Deceiver, the cinder worm, or the surf candy epoxy minnow. All these and more are available to you, thanks to the expertise of various Vineyard flyfishermen, who for the next few months will be sharing the techniques and secrets of how to tie their favorite fly.
The off-season anglers delight is organized by Cooper Gilkes, and he opens the weekly sessions on Tuesday, Jan. 4 with the basics. What the basics are, you will have to attend to find out. The sessions are held at the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club on successive Tuesdays, from 7 to 9 p.m. through April 4.
Although each evening’s specialist is subject to change, the current schedule calls for Brice Contessa to follow up Coop’s basic fundamentals with his take on the Lefty’s Deceiver. Coop returns the following two weeks with the sand eel and cinder worm, and then Joe Rogers demonstrates the squid variant on Feb. 21.
The full schedule is as follows: Jan. 24, Coop (basics); Jan. 31, Brice Contessa (classic Lefty’s Deceiver); Feb. 7, Coop sand eel); Feb. 14, Coop (cinder worm); Feb. 21, Joe Rogers (squid variant); Feb. 28, Cooper Fersen (surf candy epoxy minnow), March 7, Rob Morrison (Clouser minnow); March 14, Liz Packer (Ray’s fly or flatwing); March 21, Rob Morrison (knot tying, rigging); March 28, Jamie Boyle (TBA); April 4, (TBA).
The cost for each session is $15. For more information, visit mvrodandgun.org or call 508-627-3909.
