Editors, Vineyard Gazette;

The Vineyard is the most caring and supportive community. As we faced the loss of our home, I stopped counting at 120 the calls, emails, texts, cards, letters, gifts of flowers or food, and offers to use neighbors' homes. It was incredible and very humbling.

We are lucky to live in such a community. Thank you.

But I feel it necessary to also attach a letter I sent to Edgartown select board. It is something we all need to know.

To Edgartown select people: I feel the town must work on a plan to help people with erosion. When our house was in peril, there was no help from the town we paid taxes to for more than 40 years. When the crisis came, I frantically called the health, conservation, building departments and the town manager. No one was available as it was school vacation week. After two days I got a helpful call from Jane Varkonda, but by then we had ordered demolition on our own. If we had waited for approval, the house would have been floating in Katama Bay. As responsible citizens who love Chappy, we could not allow that.

All expenses are ours as all of our insurance policies have denied us help. Our house will not be the only one. What will you do to help the next one?
