The Martha’s Vineyard Figure Skating Club’s season celebrates a grand finale this weekend with its 34th annual showcase, Lights, Camera and Skate!
One hundred and two figure skaters from all three program levels, some as young as preschool, will be featured in a mix of group and solo performances.
“So much hard work goes into this and they all have so much fun,” said co-director Beth O’Connor, who has been teaching figure skating for nearly 20 years. “It’s a true highlight of their year of skating.”
Ms. O’Connor and co-director Jane Taylor have been choreographing pieces, selecting and editing music and picking costumes for seven months. When it’s time to start rehearsals, the kids get to know the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School cafeteria floor, where they practice until moving on to the ice just a week before the show.
“That way they actually know where they’re going when they get to the ice,” said Ms. O’Connor.
There are two chances to catch the action on the ice: Friday, March 31 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased at the rink and are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and $25 for families.
