Editors, Vineyard Gazette;
The proposal to develop 81 South Water Street and its impact on the open harbor view is being widely discussed throughout Edgartown, but the consequence of building a pool that will seriously impact the public view from Edgartown harbor has not yet been scrutinized. This property’s house and garden lie at the shoreline and are clearly visible from the water. A modern-looking pool and retaining wall will alter the historic and picturesque view from the harbor.
I urge the public to take time to become informed, make its voice heard, and support the historic district commission in requiring adherence to its guidelines. It is essential that this iconic shoreline view of historic houses, with the beautiful Federated Church in the distance, is safeguarded.
Please write by sending an email to hdc@edgartown-ma.us, or delivering a letter to the Historic District Commission, P.O. Box 5158, Edgartown, MA 02539. Please also join the public meeting via Zoom, on May 18 at 4 p.m.
