Northern Lights

There are few events at night that get one's emotions uplifted and feelings of wonder than the sight of Northern Lights. You just can't predict when they will appear overhead, but when they are here, there is huge thrill among stargazers. Scientists report that there is a greater likelihood that you could see them in this area, at this latitude in the weeks ahead.

While we can't say when, we can assure you that they've been well documented this far South. Recently we saw some media postings of Northern Lights being observed in Rhode Island. If that is the case, then we may have missed a recent opportunity.

Years ago, a group of Vineyard enthusiasts exchanged phone numbers in the hopes that, a one-person sighting here on the Island could be shared quickly. We've observed Northern Lights where ever on the Island there is a clear night sky, unobstructed by street lights and glowing house lanterns. We've seen them even in downtown Vineyard Haven, but we quickly drove to a far better observing spot. Anywhere along the Island's north shore can be ideal. There is no perfect time at night to see them, no preferred hour of the night. They can appear for any amount of time, from a few minutes to hours.

If you ever see Northern Lights share your sighting immediately with friend and family. Once seen, no one will criticize you for the possible inconvenience of sharing.
