There are no adoptions to report this week, but the pet of the week is Teddy. Teddy is a medium-sized, short-coated, mixed breed who has some hound in him. His markings are white and brindle and he’s a happy, playful boy who loves his toys, but does not care for cats. Teddy does have some reactivity issues, for which he is undergoing training quite successfully, but his training will need to be continued in his new home.
If you’d prefer a cat or two, Smokey and Bandit are two-year-old, medium-haired, male black cats. These boys are bonded brothers so we would like them to be re-homed together, but if that’s not possible it isn’t a deal breaker. Both are very sweet, very affectionate cats, definite lap sitters who love people. Smokey is the smaller of the two, very playful and quite the character. Bandit is the larger and shyer of the two.
Also still available are Peter and Teddy, eight month-old, black male rabbits. They have been hand raised, and are litter box-trained. Both are very friendly, and love to be held and cuddled. And they’re happy living indoors or out. These boys need to find homes. They have been here too long, and they don’t need to be adopted together.
Did you know that during business hours, animals can be surrendered at no cost? A behavioral assessment is done before admittance to be sure the animal can be safely adopted and does not pose any physical or medical hazards. Surrendered animals are given a medical examination, vaccinations, are spayed/neutered, and are given flea and worming treatments and ID chipping. Any medical conditions are evaluated for appropriate actions. Our primary function is to keep our guests fed and happy until they are adopted. Once the admission process is completed, we then begin the interview process for prospective adopters.
The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard is here for our community. We’re always available and our door is always open should your adoption not be a perfect fit. Also, if anyone is in need of cat food, dog food, or a crate, we have plenty and are happy to share. The Island Food Pantry also has pet food for those in need. Just give us a call during regular shelter hours.
The shelter phone number is 508-627-8662.
